Millions of people in the US suffer from mental health disorders. Although they are common, talking about them can be a struggle. In this six week series we discuss common mental health disorders, their symptoms, and treatment options available.
Why Do People Struggle to Discuss Mental Health Disorders?
Due to the stigma associated with mental illness, people do not talk about mental health as often as physical health. This can deter people from getting the necessary treatment they need and lead to feeling misunderstood and blaming themselves for their symptoms.
Mental health problems in the U.S. create a ripple effect which impacts the person, families of those with mental illness, and the community. Below are some statistics from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) about mental illness and treatment in the United States:
Approximately 1 in 5 adults experience mental illness each year
Approximately 1 in 6 youth ages 6-17 experience mental illness each year
Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among people ages 10-34
50% of all lifetime mental illness begins by age 14 and 75% by age 24
Only 43% of adults and 50% of youth with a mental health disorder receive treatment
The average delay between onset of mental illness and treatment is approximately 11 years
These statistics highlight the need for our society to develop a better understanding of mental health symptoms and increase access to appropriate treatment for these conditions. Without help, not only are those who are experiencing symptoms of mental health disorders more likely to continue having negative experiences, but those around them may struggle to know what to do to help their friend and loved one.
What Can Cause Mental Health Disorders?
Researchers are still studying what causes mental health disorders, but generally the following are found to contribute:
Inherited traits - In general, if your biological parents experience mental health disorders, you are likely to as well.
Environmental factors - Exposure to chemicals like alcohol or drugs while developing in the womb or your living situation can contribute to the development of mental health disorders
Brain chemistry - The way you are “wired,” meaning how your nerve receptors and nerve endings interact with one another, can contribute to some mental health disorders like depression.
What Are Some Signs of Mental Health Disorders?
Though not an exhaustive list, Psychiatry.com shares some common signs to watch for that may signal you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis:
Change in sleep and eating behaviors: If someone is sleeping too much or too little, or eating more or less than normal, they may be experiencing trouble with their mental health.
Loss of interest in enjoyable activities: Disinterest in activities that were once fulfilling can be a sign that someone may be experiencing mental health difficulties. Likewise, apathy towards any activity when someone was once engaged can be a concerning indicator that someone has developed a mental health disorder.
Feeling disconnected: A person who suddenly feels that they are not connected to their self or reality could be experiencing issues with their mental health, and it is important for them to seek help when this feeling occurs.
Difficulty focusing or completing activities: Struggling at work or in school does happen at times, but if someone is experiencing prolonged challenges, they may need help from a medical professional to evaluate their mental health.
Change in behavior: If someone who is usually on time for activities suddenly begins showing up late or being absent altogether, impacting their performance and long-term success, mental health challenges may be a factor.
While it is possible that slight changes in someone’s mood, activity levels, or sleep are not a certain indicator they are experiencing mental health disorder, prolonged experiences coupled with other symptoms can be signs that someone is in need of treatment options.
